Gondola Shelving for Retail Stores

Gondola shelving is freestanding, double-sided commercial shelving used to create retail store aisles. Built from heavy-gauge steel with adjustable shelf heights, gondola units are the standard fixture in grocery stores, convenience stores, and pharmacies. Starter units stand alone while add-on sections extend a run.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gondola Shelving

Pegboard is a 1980s solution: limited accessory range, locked to one manufacturer's clip-in hardware, and the dotted-hole pattern competes visually with your merchandise. Slatwall back panels solve all three: you can attach any standard slatwall accessory (faceouts, shelves, hooks, sign holders, baskets), the slats run cleanly across the panel for a modern retail look, and you can pick a slat color that matches your brand or contrasts against product. Once you've used slatwall-back gondolas, you don't go back.

Yes โ€” our back panels accept the universal slatwall accessory standard. Hooks, faceouts, shelves, sign holders, baskets, mannequin arms, and countertop displays from any reputable slatwall accessory supplier will fit. If you've already invested in slatwall accessories for a wall display, those parts move directly onto your new gondolas.

TX Store Fixtures gondolas are a complete, modern system โ€” slatwall back panels (not pegboard), color-matched slats, simpler connector hardware, all engineered to work together. They're built for new store builds, full fixture upgrades, and chains that want one consistent, modern look across locations. The hardware isn't designed to mix with older clip-in systems, so for stores starting fresh or refreshing the whole floor, our gondolas give you a cleaner finished look, broader accessory range, and faster install than legacy fixture brands.

Gondola pricing depends on height, depth, color, and quantity. Single-sided wall, double-sided island, and end-cap configurations all have different cost structures, and volume discounts kick in around 8+ bays. The fastest way to get an accurate number is our free aisle calculator โ€” it specs your full layout and a TX Store Fixtures rep follows up with your quote within one business day.

Gondola shelving is the standard freestanding shelving system used in grocery stores, convenience stores, liquor stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, and most retail environments. It features a metal frame with adjustable shelves on both sides (double-sided island) or one side (single-sided wall). Modern gondolas like ours use slatwall back panels for broader accessory compatibility. Gondola shelving maximizes product display per square foot and allows easy shelf height adjustments for different product sizes.

Gondola shelving comes in standard heights of 54, 72, and 96 inches. Choose 54 inches for stores where you want customers to see over the aisles (jewelry, boutiques, beauty). Choose 72-96 inches for maximum shelf space (grocery, hardware, liquor, convenience stores). Standard shelf depths are 16, 19, and 22 inches. Wider shelves hold more product but reduce aisle width.

Start with your floor plan and mark the perimeter โ€” single-sided gondolas go against walls. Place double-sided gondolas in the center to create aisles. Standard aisle width is 42-48 inches. For a typical convenience store, you need 4-8 double-sided runs depending on store size. End caps at the aisle ends are prime merchandising spots for featured or promotional items. Our free aisle calculator handles all of this automatically โ€” pick your industry preset, set aisle counts, and it produces the parts list.

A standard 4-foot wide, 72-inch tall gondola section holds approximately 50-100 SKUs depending on product size. A full double-sided gondola run of 4 sections (16 feet) can hold 400-800 products. The key advantage of gondola shelving is adjustable shelf heights and the slatwall back panel โ€” you can customize each section for your specific product mix and swap accessories without rebuilding the frame.

Slatwall-Back Gondola Shelving — A Modern Upgrade Over Lozier & Madix

TX Store Fixtures gondolas replace 1980s-era pegboard backs with full-panel slatwall: cleaner look, unlimited accessory options, and color-matched slats that turn your fixtures into merchandising assets instead of disappearing behind your products. The result is a modern alternative to legacy gondola systems still running the old pegboard pattern.

    Slatwall Back, Not Pegboard

Modern slatwall panels replace pegboard backs. Cleaner sightlines, no dotted-hole pattern competing with your merchandise, and a finished retail look that scans premium even at value price points.

    Universal Slatwall Accessories

Use any standard slatwall hook, faceout, shelf, sign holder, or basket. The slatwall accessory ecosystem is massive — thousands of off-the-shelf parts work with our gondolas. Pegboard locks you to one supplier’s clip-in hardware.

    Color-Matched Slats

Choose slat color to match your brand or contrast against merchandise. Unique to our design — legacy gondola systems ship one industrial gray. Differentiated fixtures help merchandise stand out and lift perceived store quality.

    In Stock, Ships Fast

Stock configurations ship from our Texas warehouse in 1–3 business days. Legacy fixture brands typically quote multi-week lead times for custom configs. Build your store now, not next quarter.

    Calculator & Ordering Questions

Quick reference for the aisle calculator + order details. (See the main FAQ above for slatwall, compatibility, and sizing questions.)

Why are Add-on units cheaper than Starters?

An Add-on shares one upright with the previous bay. A Starter has both uprights of its own. The Add-on saves about $20–$40 per bay because of the shared upright + connecting hardware.

Are shelves included in the gondola price?

Each gondola bay ships with base deck shelves at the floor, included in the Starter / Add-on price. Any upper shelves are priced separately ($19–$24.50 each depending on depth + length + material). The Shelves per Bay picker counts the base deck — so picking "4" means 1 base deck + 3 upper shelves on each side.

    Island bays are double-sided, so each bay has 2 shelf banks (one per side). 4 shelves/bay on a 3-bay island = 2 base decks/bay ร— 3 + 3 upper shelves ร— 2 sides ร— 3 bays = 6 base decks + 18 upper shelves. Wall bays are single-sided, so it's half: 3 base decks + 9 uppers for the same 3 bays ร— 4 shelves.

    How is shipping calculated?

Gondola requires LTL freight. We send your exact freight quote within 1 business day after submission. Ships from us to all 50 states, typically in 1–3 business days from our Texas warehouse.

What's the difference between Wall, Island, and Endcap?

Wall gondolas are single-sided and sit against a wall. Islands are double-sided and sit in the middle of the store — shoppers walk both sides. Endcaps attach to the end of an island for additional display surface.

    What gauge steel?

Uprights are 18-gauge cold-rolled steel powder-coated for retail use. Shelves are 20-gauge.

    Lead time for custom colors?

We stock Black and White. Custom colors run 6-8 weeks. Submit a quote request for custom colors.
